Fuel Cell and Solar Energy

The EFOY fuel cell – The perfect partner for your solar system

If you’re already using a solar system on your boat but have noticed that it doesn’t provide you with enough power when the weather’s bad or when the sail’s shadow happens to fall directly on the solar module, then the EFOY fuel cell is the perfect solution for you.

EFOY fuel cell and solar cell – dependable power on board

A fuel cell/solar cell hybrid combines the best of both technologies.

If the weather’s good, the power comes from the solar cell.

In a fuel cell/solar cell hybrid, only the solar module generates electricity if the weather’s fine. The EFOY remains in standby mode.

If the weather’s bad, or if it’s dark or winter, the power comes from the EFOY fuel cell.

A solar cell will not be able to supply enough current to the battery if the weather’s bad. The EFOY fuel cell’s built-in regulator connects directly to the battery and constantly monitors battery voltage. Should it dip below 12.3 volts, the EFOY fuel cell will automatically cut in to recharge the battery. It then reverts to standby mode – again, fully automatically.

Cost-effective to operate

A fuel cell/solar cell hybrid is an economical solution. Current from the sun is free. You’ll incur fuel costs only if there’s not enough available sunlight.

Two ways to combine the EFOY fuel cell with a solar system

You can:

  • easily retrofit an existing solar facility with an EFOY fuel cell, or
  • purchase a complete intelligent fuel cell/solar combination for your sailboat from Büttner-Elektronik.
